John Hutchins

Linguist and early machine translation researcher


John Hutchins was a linguist and information scientist who researched machine translation.

He studied at the University of Nottingham and the University of East Anglia. He worked at Durham University, the University of Sheffield and the University of East Anglia.

In 1992, he published a history of machine translation, An Introduction to Machine Translation. It was the most comprehensive guide to the history of machine translation for decades.

He was the editor of MT News International from 1992 to 1997, and of Compendium of translation software from 1992 to 2012.

He was the president of the European Association of Machine Translation from 1995 to 2003, and the International Association of Machine Translation from 1999 to 2001.
